We had our 4th flag football game of the season this morning. Against the best team in the league. The same crew that crushed another team 44 – 0. 15 minutes before the game our QB wasn’t there. I looked at my son. “Ashton!” I yelled. “You’re the QB today, buddy!” He looked at me like I’d just landed from Mars wearing a fluorescent pink tutu with tentacles sticking out of my head. The other team scored first, 7-0. We answered right back, 7-7. Then it was back and forth like ping pong match on Red Bull. We’re down 22-14 going into the 4th quarter. Ashton intercepts the pass! (Interceptions are worth 1 point), so it’s 22-15. Ashton hands the ball off to Ryan on the 2nd play, and Ryan scores, 22-22. They get the ball back. We stop them. We have 30 seconds to go with 1, maybe 2 plays. Nothing happens, and it ends in a tie, accordin gto 1 ref. The other ref said we play overtime. Each team gets 1 play. Whoever gets the most yards, wins the game. They get one play. Incomplete. We only need 1 inch. They pull the kid’s flag for no gain. Double OT. Ashton fumbles the snap. Dead play. They complete a short pass and win the game. I’m so damn proud of those boys today. Ashton fought back tears. He stepped up when it mattered most. He made mistakes. He learned.
